Monsters of Wonderland - Arcadia Q&A with Kat Kruger
I try not to be an edition warrior, my first edition was 5e but it wasn't my first ttrpg. I do find some games more fun. For example, I like Castles & Crusades and it is essentially just a different version of DnD. I liked AD&D, 3e and 4e have some mechanics I like but the whole systems don't appeal much to me, and 5e feels like a superhero game (I know I can change this as a DM but when I keep someone level 3 or above in 5e I feel like I was trying to) but it easy to play. Well C&C feels like AD&D but is smooth like 5e (though is 10 years older, thanks for 3e streamlining that they take without getting bogged down in rules and rules and rules like 3e) it's my favorite for that. They don't get the new edition hype, but they do new printings and I guess the newest printing is sans the OGL, so maybe that's a sort of new edition.
Not to say C&C is inherently better, it is just what I like. And as a Forgotten Realms fan, 4e kinda deserves some of the hate XD. I didn't know about WoW, and I'm sad Dragon Magazine got axed, so sad. I played Pathfinder before DnD and wasn't a big fan!
I started with 2nd Edition. I had the core books. Played for a few years. Then, I forgot about the hobby. I wasn't around for either 3rd or 4th edition. Every now and then, I'd feel an urge to play. Yet, I no longer had any books and knew no one else who was playing. It was by coincidence that I had a few extra dollars a few years ago and 5E just so happened to be the current edition. So, that's what I bought. I never even heard of CR until after I was looking at ways you could play online. At that point of time, I had purchased Talespire and was looking for videos of people using it for real games.
Wow, this just changed my whole perspective on the hobby. I've been trying to make big adventures work for years, and rarely finished them. The few times I did it was awesome at the time, but now I look back on those times and think "I wish my adventures were as awesome as that", or something along those lines. It had become a sad sort of nostalgia, and I've been losing hope that I would ever experience accomplishing something great in any TTRPG again. Thanks @mcolville for giving me hope for my favorite hobby again. I will be sending this to the people I play with.
And this is where my dream comes crashing down cause I only have 2 friends 🤣
6:30 "I've said this in another video, so this may seem like deja vu for some of you"
From the OSR perspective, the increase in chance-dependent results of battle could give you options to make players think about the conduct of their opponent. Perhaps take more caution around opponents who will give no mercy. Also consider giving your players controllable pets and familiars if you want to buff them. If we're talking 5th edition, a level 1 hero, a warhorse steed, and a mastiff hound companion is probably on par with the power levels of some level 1 parties
I’m f*king pissed about oatmeal. How dare you bring it up.
This was so so well done 😂
My players were heroes in greek myth send by some of the gods, but they thought about changing sides and asked what would happen. The answer was that the same gods would send other heroes as their antagonists with assistance of some of their allies. They decided to stay heroes, but it would have been fun either way we all thought.
And high level heroes are so fun to turn or flavor their skills in an evil way. Thats why we instigated single sessions where they used their evil flavors in politically convoluted plots. Fun fun fun!
I love your face man, idk your cute funny I want you to be my dad and I wanna giggle while drawing fallacies on it
Yep when me and my friend started we wanted to simulate our favorite games and stories with big adventures. We never finished them. Everyone now complains that we don't finish and we want to. So it's my turn to DM and I had the idea of a short linear experience and I think that's for the best.
I've seen this video a few times, how the part about recruiting a second character happened 3 times back to back? XD
And that’s what I was getting wrong about downtime. I’ve done it better then in the DMG, but not to this level. Thanks Matt.
you rock
would love to watch more videos of you just going thru an adventure book
Maybe a comparison to fantasy literature is apt. The big king epic fantasy series is actually not all that, and reading a good ol sword and sorcery story packs a lot of the lunch sought after
I rarely run these premade campaigns, the 5e ones being too large, my favorite there being Lost Mines of Phandelver, notice the size? White Plume Mountain, Storm Over Neverwinter, etc and most of the old modules and the size from many other TTRPGs still.
This is working well for me right now, a modular set of adventures with vague overarching ideas but very very vague.
I assume this will happen to me once the MCDM RPG comes out. :( If I want to play with other people I know, I'll have to go back to DnD....... I'll put in a lot of effort to get them to switch entierly!
01:23 was an indirect reference to a moment in Narnia...
I was listening to the Mr In-Between story thinking what I'd do, swap character sheets in the big reveal moment, and I got a chill when you said that's what you did.
Mercenaries 2 was a fantastic game. Hours and hours... and hours of chaos!
I would love to hear your take on WFRP 4th edition.
"Your enjoyment is coming at the expense of someone else's misery" That's what Monopoly is for, not D&D 😄
Bombadil serves at least 2 purposes. First, that the world is a fantastical place once we leave our safe space. Second, not everyone is susceptible to evil. Some just have a natural resistance. Also, Tom gave Merry the blade of Westernesse without which the Witch King could not have been destroyed.
You know you find the right hobby when your mentor sais "you will spend the rest of your life getting better at it" and your invulentary automatic response is to smile. I didn't even know I was capable of loving a hobby this much
This is an old video but something you mentioed in it is an issue that I've been having recently. You mentioned how you didn't like to tell the playters what their options were, since it kinda minimized their agency. I completely agree with this, but currently my brother who is playing in my first ever campaign has been asking me to make it more clear about what the players can do in a given scenario. I really don't like to say 'I think you options are probably a, b, and c' because if there was an option d I didn't account for, it's now never gonna happen because I've given them their options now. How do I get better about getting the players to think of their own choices rather than thinking about 'options' I'm giving them as a DM.
Been years since I’ve watched a Running the Game and I remember why I enjoyed it so much. Thanks for the insight.
Excellent. Thank you very much.
This man is a gift from God thank you so much
maybe put your 4 minute ads at the end of your video next time
Awesome videos man! They are really informative and helping me get at ease with being a DM. Thank you.
This is really cool! I know it is a bit late but from this I made a Goblin Boss called Klank. A huge chunky boy who wears a patchwork mess of armour that the players can knock-off to reduce his AC. He has a bonus action to call in 2 additional goblins (if available from a pre-rolled pool) He has a reaction called "Gimme That!" where he can pick up a bit of armour (scattered around the lair) or steal a shield from a nearby goblin to affix to his armour, if he is hit by an attack. My Villain Actions mostly require the goblin's to use their reaction to perform the given action. This is hoping to allow the players to continue to move around and keep it dynamic. Then he has three Villain Actions. "Grab One Quick!": At end of any player's turn, he allows each goblin to pickup a shield or weapon as a free action and may then use their reaction to use it either as an attack (improvised or not) or to equip it (shield / armour). "Bring Them Down!": At end of any player's turn, all goblins can immediately use their reaction to attack a player twice. "Protect Me, Idiots!": Near the end of battle, at the end of any player's turn, if Klank's AC is reduced to below 14, he is able to disengage and move up to his movement speed and command the remaining goblin's to do the same, forming a barrier of goblins between the players and Klank, . Klank has a twin sister who is more of necromancy and magic and rides a Giant Wolf Spider, so should pair nicely for a memorable and interesting fight! Any suggestions?
One of my group decided he wanted to run tomb of annihilation for his first time DMing. We all thought this was mostly normal. And then we played for 1-2 years and it was filled with the frustrations matt describes: we did a lot, yet felt like we acheived nothing of note. We struggled to remember why we were doing things. Add a hex crawl with (imo) 5e's meh survival/travel rules and it felt like a slog, rather than the epic adventure we'd hoped for. I've had a lot more fun playing short modules (2-6 sessions) with simple stories. And at least that way, if the module's a dud, it's nbd!
30 seconds in and YES no further questions your honour
im trying so hard to focus but down in the blah blah keeps making me laugh
☮
It seems like post-Roman Britain would be perfect for this… time to go look at maps!
Try not reading through Shadows Over Bőgenhafen and running it Matt.
My parents and my mom's work friends actually did play with two different rulesets at the same time because my dad and the DM Scott played second edition and because my dad played 2nd my mom played 2nd because she had never played until my dad taught her how but the other of my mom's work friends (i don't remember his name) started playing with 3rd edition that year so he played with 3rd edition rules while the rest played with 2nd rules
"You don't convert encounters, you just look at them and create a new one with the new rules". Matt, my friend, that *is* converting an encounter!
Can you review viewer submitted campaigns and help us make them better?
Anna/Judge illrigger - Lars/The Commander battlemaster - Matt/DM Töm/Nails sorcerer - Tom/Copper&Bigcat ranger - Phil/Leiutenant pugilist
The Blade Runner sequel didn't "flop". Huh?
One thing I love to do and still challenges is allow players to use their class features and even cast spells to either reduce the difficulty or allow them to use a skill that might not otherwise be applicable. Like maybe intimidate won't work in a chase scene where they're trying to escape a horde of undead, but if the cleric uses turn on dead and expends a use of channel Divinity, then I would let them make an intimidate check as they try and use their force of will to push back the horde to allow the party to make some progress
❤️🥳👍🏿
I appreciate the mental connections between concepts. Thanks for the video
I've moved away from using any prewritten anything. I always feel so restricted by the written stuff, that i enjoy my homebrew. It also feels like most pre-written nowadays give lots of useless random information and not enough important plot information. May just be me.
Really good, loved it!
I could very easily see how a DM who wants to do a West Marches style campaign in Exandria could adapt The Slayer's Take in Vasselheim to be the driving force for all of the adventures. Issylra is a vast, untamed wilderness with Vasselheim being a point of light settlement. Initially, the DM can act as the Guildmaster and post contracts for different monsters to get the campaign moving in the right direction, and then, in the process of exploration, hunt parties can come across the ruins of temples, towers, dungeons, what have you, that, due to the time constraints of the contracts, they cannot explore fully, or maybe at all... These can then become player rumors that get circulated and can be new adventures that other groups of players go on. I think it would also provide different styles of play to satisfy the different player styles. For the players that are combat focused, they can keep taking contracts and hunting and killing ever more challenging monsters. For players who like dungeon delving and exploration, they can chase after the player rumors and explore the ruins of Issylra. Then for the players who want more of a role playing experience, they could maybe have sessions where they explore Vasselheim, or even journey to other cities in Exandria and engage with the factions there.
God, I love this shit
Matt. Where is the 4e video? 4e is so far in the past that most new players don't know anything about it.
